Ukraine’s security service has announced that it has caught two people who were allegedly working as spies. These individuals are accused of secretly gathering important military information about Ukraine’s defences. The spies, one man and one woman, were taken into custody after security agents searched their homes and found phones and other evidence suggesting they were involved in espionage.
According to Ukraine’s Security Service, known as the SBU, this is the first time the country has uncovered a spy network linked directly to Hungary’s military intelligence. The network was reportedly set up to collect secret details about Ukraine’s air defence systems, especially in the Zakarpattia region. This area is in western Ukraine, close to the border with Hungary.
Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO, both of which are supposed to support Ukraine during its current conflict with Russia. However, tensions have been rising between Ukraine and Hungary in recent times. The SBU has made it clear that while the spies were gathering sensitive information, there is no direct evidence that their activities were meant to help Russia.

Former Soldiers Turned Suspected Spies
The two people arrested are said to be former members of the Ukrainian military. This detail has caused particular concern because their past roles might have given them access to important knowledge about Ukraine’s defence setups. The security service believes that the spies were focusing on gathering information about where Ukraine’s air defence systems are located. These systems are very important for protecting the country from missile attacks and air raids.
But the spying didn’t stop there. The SBU also claims that the two suspects were trying to find out how local people in Zakarpattia felt about the situation. They were reportedly checking the mood among the public to guess how residents might react if Hungary ever made a military move into the area. This kind of information could be valuable for planning future actions or stirring up trouble in the region.
The arrests were made after Ukrainian agents raided the homes of the suspects. During these searches, they reportedly seized mobile phones and other items that pointed to spying activities. The suspects are now being charged with treason, a very serious crime in Ukraine, which can result in life imprisonment if they are found guilty.

A Tense Silence From Hungary
So far, the Hungarian government has not made any public comments about these serious accusations. This silence is raising eyebrows, especially given Hungary’s position as a NATO and EU member, organizations that have supported Ukraine since the conflict with Russia began in 2022.
The accusations come at a time when Hungary’s government has already faced criticism for taking positions that seem friendlier to Russia, despite being part of alliances that back Ukraine. The discovery of a spy network allegedly run by Hungary’s military intelligence is adding more fuel to the already tense relationship between the two neighbouring countries.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness. They have said that their investigation is ongoing and that anyone involved in spying activities will face the full force of the law. The captured suspects now face a possible life sentence, highlighting the gravity of the crime they are accused of committing.
For now, the SBU has not provided more details about whether other members of this alleged network are still at large. They have also not stated if this case is connected in any way to larger international spy operations. However, what is clear is that Ukraine views this plot as a significant threat to its national security.
