Canada and the United States are now locked in a fierce trade war, and tensions are higher than ever. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke at a heated news conference, accusing U.S. President Donald Trump of launching tariffs to weaken Canada’s economy. Trudeau claimed that the ultimate goal of these harsh trade measures is to bring Canada to its knees, making it easier for the U.S. to take control of the country.

Trump had announced new tariffs on Canadian imports, slapping a 10% tax on energy products and a staggering 25% on nearly everything else. In response, Canada hit back quickly with its own tariffs. Ottawa placed a 25% tax on C$30 billion worth of American goods, including cosmetics, appliances, tires, fruit, and wine. Trudeau warned that if necessary, Canada would add tariffs on another C$125 billion worth of American products within the next 21 days.

Speaking to reporters, Trudeau strongly rejected Trump’s claim that fentanyl trafficking was a reason for these trade restrictions. He called it a “bogus, completely unjustified, completely false” excuse. Instead, Trudeau insisted that the U.S. president’s real objective was to cause economic devastation in Canada, making it easier for America to take over. “Let’s be clear about his intentions—he wants to weaken us. But Canada will never become the 51st state,” Trudeau declared.

‘Abandoning Friends for Enemies’

Trudeau did not hold back in his criticism of the U.S. administration’s foreign policy. He directly addressed the U.S. president, saying, “Donald, this is a very dumb thing to do.” The prime minister appeared visibly angry, questioning why the U.S. would start a trade war with Canada, its closest ally, while at the same time seeking closer ties with Russia.

Canada Tightens the Grip: Fresh Sanctions on Russian Networks

“The United States has chosen to start a trade war with Canada, its closest partner and ally, while simultaneously seeking a positive relationship with Russia and appeasing Vladimir Putin, whom Trudeau called a lying, murderous dictator. “How does that make sense?” he asked, his frustration evident.” Trudeau said, his frustration clear.

The prime minister also asked Americans to reflect on their country’s actions. “How does it feel to jettison one’s friends and allies in favor of a country that has never wished Americans well?” he questioned. Trudeau argued that Russia’s actions have often harmed the American economy and undermined U.S. values, yet the U.S. government appears to be pushing away friendly nations while reaching out to adversaries.

Trump Strikes Back

Trump was quick to respond after Canada imposed its retaliatory tariffs. Trump turned to social media to mock Trudeau, calling him “Governor Trudeau” instead of Prime Minister. On Truth Social, he wrote, “Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he imposes a retaliatory tariff on the U.S., our reciprocal tariff will immediately increase by the same amount!”

The remark was seen as an insult, implying that Canada is not truly an independent nation but rather a state under U.S. control. Many Canadians found the comment offensive, reinforcing their concerns about Trump’s intentions.

While the two leaders exchanged heated words, businesses and consumers in both countries braced for the economic impact of the escalating trade war. With billions of dollars at stake and diplomatic relations deteriorating, tensions between Canada and the U.S. are reaching a breaking point.
