In the first five months of 2025, something surprising has happened in Ireland. While more and more people are buying electric vehicles (EVs), Tesla’s sales have taken a dip. This means that even though the overall market for EVs is doing better, Tesla is not keeping up with the competition.
From January to May this year, 11,877 new EVs were registered in Ireland. That’s a big jump compared to the same time last year, when 9,548 EVs were licensed. This shows a healthy 25% increase in interest for electric cars in general.
But when we look at Tesla, the numbers don’t follow this happy trend. In 2024, during the same five-month period, 1,080 new Teslas were registered. This year, that number slightly fell to 1,076. While the drop is small in terms of actual cars, it’s important because it happened during a time when the whole EV market was growing fast.
Because of this, Tesla’s share of the EV market in Ireland has fallen. In early 2024, Tesla made up 11.4% of all new EVs. In the same period of 2025, that share dropped to 9.1%. So while more electric cars are being sold, fewer of them are Teslas.
Tesla Drops from Monthly Top Spots
Ireland’s Central Statistics Office (CSO) only started closely tracking the makes and models of EVs from July 2024. Since then, Tesla has mostly stayed popular. In most months, at least one Tesla model made it into the top five best-selling EVs.

However, this changed in 2025. In January and May, no Tesla model made it into the monthly top five. This is surprising because Tesla has been one of the most well-known electric car brands for many years.
Car dealers in Ireland say they have been noticing a big jump in people wanting EVs this year. But even they were surprised that Tesla didn’t benefit from this boom like other brands did. According to some of them, it’s strange to see Tesla’s numbers fall when others are going up.
Drop Seen Across Europe
Ireland is not the only place where Tesla is seeing a drop in sales. A similar trend has been reported in many other European countries. In April 2025, Tesla sales across 32 countries in Europe dropped sharply. Tesla sold only 7,261 vehicles that month. That’s a 49% fall compared to April 2024, when they sold 14,228 cars.
At the same time, other companies that sell electric cars saw their numbers go up. Sales of battery-electric vehicles by all brands rose about 28% in Europe. This shows that people are still interested in buying EVs, just not as many Teslas.

Some analysts believe that Tesla’s image may have taken a hit. They suggest that people are looking at other brands instead, even though Tesla was once seen as the leader in electric cars.
In short, while electric cars are becoming more popular in Ireland and across Europe, Tesla’s market share is shrinking. Despite having been a big player in the EV world, the company is now facing tougher competition and slipping sales in several regions.
