Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has taken strong action to curb Russian influence in Ukraine. On Sunday, he signed a decree targeting pro-Russian propagandists and politicians. The move is part of Ukraine’s broader effort to defend itself against Russia’s ongoing aggression.
This decree, created with the help of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), brings new sanctions against individuals who have supported or spread Russian narratives. Zelensky also announced that state honors previously awarded to pro-Russian figures would be revoked. “We are blocking propagandists working for Russia, individuals who have sided with the enemy, and those aiding Russia in continuing the war,” Zelensky said in a video address. He also promised more sanctions soon.
Targeting Pro-Russian Politicians
The sanctions specifically target 18 people, many of whom are well-known politicians who have been associated with pro-Kremlin ideas. These figures have either spread Russian propaganda or had direct connections with Moscow. The decree blocks their assets and bans them from participating in Ukraine’s public life.
One of the politicians targeted by these sanctions has faced criticism for years due to his ties to Russia. Once a powerful leader, he had promoted ideas that aligned with Kremlin-backed narratives. This included suggesting that Ukraine’s struggles were due to “radicals,” a claim often pushed by Russian propaganda.
Another individual on the list had previously been arrested for allegedly working with Russian intelligence. Ukrainian authorities accused him of spreading false information designed to harm the country’s security. Evidence showed that he had connections with Russian agents and had tried to weaken Ukraine from within.

Revoking State Honors

One of the most controversial cases involves a figure who received the prestigious “Hero of Ukraine” award in the past. This individual had close ties with Russia for years and was even part of meetings with top Russian officials. Despite his role in Ukraine’s politics, he was accused of betraying the country by aligning himself with Moscow.
This isn’t the first time Zelensky has revoked state honors. In 2023, another high-profile individual lost his “Hero of Ukraine” title after being arrested and later exchanged in a prisoner swap with Russia. Zelensky has made it clear that Ukraine will not honor those who have turned their backs on the nation.

Alongside these measures, Zelensky also made new appointments in the country’s defense and security sectors. These changes aim to strengthen Ukraine’s military during its fight against Russia.
