In a significant development, both the US and Canada have taken action by imposing sanctions and blacklisting Samidoun, a group that supports Palestinian prisoners. The governments of these two countries accuse Samidoun of having ties to terrorism, alleging that it raises funds for a well-known political faction linked to terrorist activities. This move has drawn international attention as it comes during a time of heightened conflict in the Middle East, especially the ongoing violence in Gaza.

Why Did the US and Canada Sanction Samidoun?

The US and Canada decided to sanction Samidoun due to its alleged connections with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a group both nations have long designated as a terrorist organization. According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Samidoun pretends to be a charity focused on helping Palestinian prisoners. However, the Treasury claims that the organization’s real purpose is to raise money to support the PFLP.

Bradley Smith, an official from the U.S. Treasury, explained that groups like Samidoun “pretend to offer humanitarian support but instead use funds to help terrorist organizations.” As a result, the U.S. government has frozen any assets Samidoun holds within its borders and prohibited American citizens from doing business with the group.

At the same time, Canada announced its decision to designate Samidoun as a “terrorist entity.” According to Dominic Leblanc, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, the decision makes it clear that Canada will not tolerate activities related to terrorism, including raising funds for terrorist groups.

What Is Samidoun and How Does It Describe Itself?

Samidoun, also known as the Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, claims it is an international network working to support Palestinian prisoners. The organization’s website states that it aims to raise awareness about the harsh conditions these prisoners face and provide resources to help them in their struggle for freedom. According to Samidoun, these prisoners are political detainees fighting for their rights and the freedom of their homeland.

Despite these claims, US and Canada officials maintain that the group has deeper ties to terrorism. Pro-Israel organizations in both countries, as well as in Europe, have been calling for action against Samidoun for years. They argue that the group promotes the interests of organizations that use violence and terrorism as political tools.

Recent Conflict and Rising Pressure

The sanctions against Samidoun by the US and Canada come during a period of intense violence in Gaza. Since October 2023, Israel has been engaged in a military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, leading to significant casualties among Palestinians. This ongoing conflict has sparked protests across North America and Europe, with many pro-Palestinian groups speaking out against Israel’s actions.

As these protests have grown, so has the pressure on Western governments to take action against organizations perceived to be supporting Palestinian resistance. In addition to the US and Canada, Germany also banned Samidoun in late 2023, accusing the group of spreading “anti-Israel propaganda” and glorifying violence.

The sanctions imposed by the US and Canada freeze any assets Samidoun may hold in these countries and prevent their citizens from working with the organization. Additionally, the U.S. has sanctioned a Canadian citizen who they claim is part of the PFLP’s leadership and has been raising funds for the group.

The US and Canada have taken a firm stand against Samidoun, accusing the organization of supporting terrorist activities through its alleged ties to the PFLP. While Samidoun denies these accusations and asserts that it is focused on helping Palestinian prisoners, both governments remain committed to their sanctions as part of a broader effort to curb terrorist financing.
