Smt. Bharti Bhasne Convicted and Sentenced to 3 Years Rigorous Imprisonment in PMLA Case

Smt. Bharti Bhasne was convicted by the designated Ld. Special PMLA Court in Bhopal for the offences committed under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002 and sentenced to three years in Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs. 50,000/-. The Ld. Court further ordered the forfeiture of the properties attached by the ED under the PMLA, 2002, to the tune of Rs 1,58,63,223 /-. 

The ED launched an investigation based on an FIR filed by the Lokayukta Police in Bhopal against Jitendra Kumar Bhasne, Superintending Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD), and his wife Smt. Bharti Bhasne for committing an offence under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Indian Penal Code for acquiring DA between 01.06.1998 and 04.05.2010. 

throughout the course of the inquiry, it was discovered that Smt. Bharti Bhasne had invested Rs. 2,76,10,844 /- in her name and the names of her family members throughout the specified check period. It was also discovered that accused Smt. Bharti Bhasne utilised Rs. 1,58,63,2231 /- of the criminal proceeds of Rs. 2,76,10,844/- to purchase moveable properties in the form of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Policies. 

The ED temporarily attached these insurance plans worth Rs. 1,58,63,223/-. Jitendra Bhasne died owing to sickness before the ED filed the chargesheet. On April 6, 2018, a prosecution case was filed against Smt. Bharti Bhasne.
