CBI sources said B P Verma, Executive Director (Works) allegedly asked a company, Vesuvius India Limited, to oblige him with bribe as he “went out of the way” to hand over work order worth crores.

The company official V K Singh decided to given the Executive Director a costly watch and Rs one lakh as he felt that Verma was soon going to become the CEO and might harm its future prospects, the sources said.

On 8th January 2017 in Rourkela Steel Plant Ltd the meeting scheduled. About which the CBI got an input and carried out a raid at the venue, the sources said. The team recovered the bribe amount and the watch.

At the office and the residence of Verma the agency carried out searches.Therefore, it found  Rs 20 lakh  recovered in new currency.

CBI spokesperson R K Gaur today said here a case of financial crime conspiracy under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered.

According to ED (works) Rourkela Steel Plant Ltd entered into the criminal conspiracy.  with the said private persons as well as others in the award of supply orders of electrical, electronics, electro-mechanical machineries and parts to Rourkela Steel Plant in favour of manufacturers,” he said.

Gaur said the official was allegedly getting bribe in cash and kind. For the  smooth execution of those contracts in violation of rules. Corruption also forms a major part of bribe.

According to ED (works) they demanded gratification from the company. The private firm sanctioned work order in the “AMR Cell”. Therefore, Which was in the favour of there company.

Additionally, CBI trapped and arrested the Executive Director and Rourkela officials.Hence, the accused residence took the bribed amount of Rs. 1Lakh as well as the watch.

The searches conducted at nine places on the premises of the accused person that led to recovery of incriminating documents.  Hence, the 20 Lakhs new currency notes discovered at the house of the Executive Director.
