FBI Thwarts Deadly Election Day Attack Planned by ISIS Sympathizers Armed with AK-47

Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, a 27-year-old citizen of Afghanistan, has admitted in a U.S. federal court that he planned to carry out a terror attack on American soil. He pleaded guilty to supporting ISIS and attempting to organize a mass shooting on Election Day, November 5, 2024. Tawhedi had been living in the United States but secretly supported the terrorist group and plotted to kill innocent Americans.

Together with Abdullah Haji Zada, his 18-year-old partner, Tawhedi aimed to carry out the attack in the name of ISIS. The plan was to create mass casualties using powerful weapons and ammunition. The two conspired to buy two AK-47 rifles, 500 bullets, and 10 magazines. Fortunately, their plan was stopped in time by federal authorities before any harm was done.

Between June and October 2024, Tawhedi and Zada made moves to collect the weapons and coordinate their attack. But what they didn’t know was that the person they were dealing with was an undercover FBI agent. This led to their quick arrest and the collapse of their violent plan.

How the FBI Stopped the Attack

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies began monitoring Tawhedi after he started communicating with an ISIS facilitator. In these conversations, Tawhedi explained that he needed guns and ammunition for a terrorist attack and even asked if 500 rounds would be enough. These messages were crucial in helping investigators understand his intentions.

On October 7, 2024, both Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi and Abdullah Haji Zada were arrested in Oklahoma City right after they bought the weapons from the undercover agent. The arrest was carefully planned and timed to ensure public safety.

Abdullah Haji Zada, who was 17 years old at the time of the arrest, later pleaded guilty in April 2025 to his role in the terror plot. He admitted to helping with the firearms purchase and being fully aware of the violent plan. Though a minor during the crime, Zada entered his guilty plea as an adult and will be sentenced as one.

What Happens Next

Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi pleaded guilty to two major crimes — attempting to provide support to ISIS and trying to acquire weapons to commit an act of terrorism. He now faces up to 20 years in prison for supporting ISIS and another 15 years for the firearms charge. After serving his sentence, Tawhedi will be permanently removed from the United States and sent back to Afghanistan.

Abdullah Haji Zada, his co-conspirator, faces up to 15 years in federal prison. Like Tawhedi, he will also be deported to Afghanistan after completing his sentence.

This case was led by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in Oklahoma City, along with help from multiple federal and local agencies. Their joint work ensured that a deadly terrorist attack was stopped before it could take place.

The U.S. Department of Justice and law enforcement made it clear that anyone who tries to harm Americans through terrorism — like Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi and Abdullah Haji Zada — will face serious consequences. Their quick action prevented what could have been a major national tragedy.

Thanks to their brave and careful work, the planned Election Day attack was fully stopped, and the people responsible are being brought to justice.
