On April 16, 2023, Sukumar Kamaliya, Head Constable, SSB (who had previously been assigned to the ED as Sepoy on deputation from 2019–2022), was taken into custody by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Kolkata.
He was discovered to have been involved in impersonating the investigating officer to conduct unauthorised searches in Kolkata and to issue counterfeit or fraudulent summonses to one of the subjects of the inquiry.
In one instance, Sukumar Kamaliya received information regarding an inquiry into a person while the person was on assignment without authorization. After the person was repatriated, as part of an extortion scheme, the person was served with a fictitious summons in an effort to extract money from him. The summons was sent to the victim via WhatsApp from his phone so that they could talk directly and demand money from him.
In the second case, he entered an unlicensed coffee shop in South Kolkata and searched it without permission before threatening to extort Rs. 10 lahks from the owner. The coffee shop’s proprietor reported the incident to the ED. The ED became aware of the situation right once, and a search of his home led to the discovery and confiscation of a number of electronic devices and damning papers.
He was detained by the ED until April 29, 2023, after being arrested on April 16, 2023, in accordance with the PMLA of 2002. The case is currently the subject of more research.
