In a bold and unexpected message, U.S. President Donald Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin “crazy” after Russia launched its largest missile and drone attack on Ukraine since the war began. Trump made this statement on his Truth Social platform, writing in capital letters, “He has gone absolutely CRAZY!”

President Trump, who once claimed to have a good relationship with Putin, now says the Russian leader has changed for the worse. Speaking to reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, he said, “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him?” He went on to say, “He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that.”

This comes after Russian forces launched over 360 missiles and drones into Ukrainian cities overnight, killing at least 12 people, including three children in the Zhytomyr region. The deadly assault marks the most intense aerial attack in the conflict so far. Cities across Ukraine were shaken by explosions, and buildings were destroyed.

New Sanctions on the Table

President Trump warned that the United States may impose fresh sanctions on Moscow in response to the violent strikes. Sanctions are penalties meant to pressure a country to stop certain actions, such as freezing assets or banning trade. Trump told reporters that he is “absolutely” considering them due to the attacks on innocent civilians.

“We’re in the middle of talking, and he’s shooting rockets into Kyiv and other cities. I don’t like it at all,” Trump said. He also stated, “Missiles and drones are being shot into cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever.”

Trump blamed the ongoing war on what he called “gross incompetence and hatred.” He made it clear he believes this war would never have happened under his leadership in the first place. “This is Zelenskyy’s, Putin’s, and Joe Biden’s war — not Trump’s,” the president stated. “I am only helping to put out the big and ugly fires.”

Zelenskyy Also Criticized

President Trump did not limit his criticism to Vladimir Putin. He also sharply attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In his Truth Social post, Trump claimed, “Zelenskyy is doing his country no favors by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems. I don’t like it, and it better stop.”

This double criticism — targeting both the leader of the invading country and the leader of the country being attacked — is unusual and has drawn attention around the world.

Former President Joe Biden was also blamed by Trump as one of the people responsible for the conflict. Trump has often argued that Biden’s leadership weakened the U.S. position globally, allowing the situation to get worse.

Meanwhile, no response has yet been given by the Kremlin or President Zelenskyy’s office regarding Trump’s statements.

Russia continues to describe its invasion as a “special military operation,” saying it is meant to protect Russian interests and stop NATO expansion. Ukraine, however, calls it an unprovoked act of aggression, and fighting continues to intensify, especially in eastern parts of the country. Drone attacks and heavy battles along the front lines are ongoing.
