Illegal coal mining: ED Attached Assets worth 15 Crore of Joydeb Mondal

In an illegal coal mining case, the Indian AML watchdog Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has temporarily attached Joydeb Mondal’s and Gurupada Maji’s movable property to the tune of Rs. 15.50 crore and Rs. 7.90 crores, respectively, in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA), 2002 provisions. Anup Majee @ Lala’s close friends and business partners in illicit coal mining are Joydeb Mondal and Gurupada Maji. 

Based on an FIR filed against the accused on November 27, 2020, ED started its investigation.

According to the ED’s inquiry, between 2017 and 2020, Anup Majee’s accomplices Gurupada Maji and Joydeb Mondal supplied POC totalling Rs. 89.11 crore and Rs. 58.05 crores, respectively. Gurupada Maji laundered his POC of Rs. 104 Crore through 6 shell firms in Kolkata (Approx.). In reference to Joydeb Mondal, POC assets have been added.

Earlier in this matter, the ED searched 56 locations and attached assets totalling Rs. 181.24 crore through five attachment orders issued by Anup Majee and other connected parties in accordance with the PMLA. In this matter, the Directorate has so far detained three people: Gurupada Maji on May 26, 2022; Vikas Mishra and Ashok Kumar Mishra in 2021. On May 13, 2021, a prosecution complaint was submitted. The matter is currently the subject of more inquiry.
