Big Storm Brewing Faces Turbulent Times Amid Eviction and Lawsuit Allegations

More Articles

A well-known figure in the Tampa Bay craft beer scene, Big Storm Brewing is currently swimming through tough waters. In addition to being threatened with closure from its Ybor City site, the brewery is being sued for allegedly engaging in financial misconduct connected to a financially ailing nonprofit. The eviction’s specifics, the litigation, and the larger ramifications for Big Storm Brewing and its proprietor, L.J. Govoni, are covered in this article.

Eviction from Ybor City

The Ybor City facility of Big Storm Brewing, which has been a popular destination since its establishment, is scheduled to close on June 16. Third Lake Partners, the brewery’s landlord, has filed for eviction, claiming roughly $400,000 in unpaid rent. Big Storm has already had to close its locations in Odessa and Cape Coral, so this eviction is just another blow.

In a statement, Catalyst Communications Group, speaking on behalf of Big Storm, thanked supporters: “This decision was not made lightly, and we want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of you who have supported us. Our Ybor taproom has been a place of joy, creativity, and community since we opened our doors.”

Big Storm Brewing and the Lawsuit Allegations

A lawsuit brought by local investor and doctor Dr. David Wenk has made matters worse for the brewery. According to Dr. Wenk, he made a $3 million investment in Big Storm Brewing in 2021. He claims that until recently, when he found cheques showing a transfer of more than $4.1 million from the Center for Special Needs Trust into Big Storm’s accounts, he had not received any financial paperwork. Big Storm was allegedly used to embezzle and launder trust funds, according to the lawsuit.

The Nonprofit Connection

A recent court dispute has engulfed the St. Petersburg-based Center for Special Needs Trust Administration. The institute is being sued by Florida’s Attorney General, who claims that Leo Govoni, the center’s founder, embezzled more than $100 million meant to help the crippled. L.J. Govoni, the proprietor of Big Storm Brewing, is the son of Leo Govoni.

The ongoing scandal has been linked to Big Storm and concerns have been raised by this familial relationship. It is important to remember, though, that L.J. Govoni is not mentioned in the civil lawsuit the Attorney General filed against the organization.

L.J. Govoni’s Response

L.J. Govoni has angrily denied any misconduct in response to the accusations. He declared in a statement that the lawsuit’s allegations are unfounded and meant to humiliate his family and damage his reputation. Govoni stated that he was not involved in the Center for Special Needs Trust Administration and that he would vigorously defend himself against the charges.

“The claims made in this lawsuit are entirely false, baseless, and lack any factual foundation and are designed solely to tarnish my reputation and embarrass my family. Look no further than the fact that I first heard about the suit from the media. Mr. Wenk knows full well that I have absolutely nothing to do with the Center for Special Needs Trust Administration,” Govoni said.

Legal Counteraction

Additionally, Govoni declared that he will sue Dr. Wenk and his partners for what he considers to be a deliberate attack on his reputation. He contended that Wenk’s case runs counter to the paperwork Wenk signed, acknowledging that he understood the dangers associated with investing and had done his due diligence.

“I want to make it unequivocally clear that I have never engaged in any fraudulent activities or wrongdoing as alleged. These accusations are not only unfounded but also defamatory, and I am committed to fighting them vigorously. In response to this malicious attack on my character, I intend to take immediate legal action against Mr. Wenk and his associates,” Govoni said.

“While the law affords a Plaintiff the right to allege wrongdoings, it does not allow them the right to their own fictitious facts. The basis of Mr. Wenk’s lawsuit contradicts documents he himself signed stating his accreditation, sophistication, and the due diligence he performed on this investment. For him and his counsel to assert otherwise is nothing short of a bald-faced lie. I will not allow attacks on my character to go unchallenged and will pursue all available legal remedies,” Govoni continued.

Conclusion

At a loss over being forced to leave its Ybor City facility and facing a lawsuit that questions its financial stability, Big Storm Brewing is at a turning point. The brewery’s reputation has definitely taken a hit as a result of the brewing tempest, even though L.J. Govoni is standing by him. How Big Storm Brewing will fare in these volatile times and in the future is still up in the air as the legal disputes play out.
