On September 10, 2023, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) arrested Kunal Gupta, the owner and director of M/s Met Technologies Pvt Ltd. He was remanded to ED custody till September 22, 2023, by the Hon’ble Special PMLA Court in Kolkata.
According to the FIR filed by the Bidhannagar Police, M/s Met Technologies Pvt. Ltd. and its associates were accused of major offences, such as cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy under different sections of the IPC. An unlawful contact centre operated by the corporation in Salt Lake, Kolkata, engaged in fraudulent operations both domestically and internationally, was discovered as a result of the inquiry and was later sealed by the police.
According to an ED probe, the stated company’s representatives targeted trusting citizens in the USA, UK, and Australia. They tricked people into paying large sums of money by posing as representatives of trustworthy companies and offering fake tech help, misleading online sales, and phoney loan offers through fake mobile applications. Also suspected of participating in unlawful betting and internet gambling is Mr Kunal Gupta. He has developed businesses in the US, the UK, and Australia, it is also discovered. It is also believed that two of his UK-based businesses were hit with hefty fines by Ofcom, the country’s telecom regulator, for engaging in the unlawful practice of changing a customer’s telephone service provider without the customer’s consent.
According to an inquiry by the ED, the money was laundered before being smuggled into the hospitality industry, which includes bars, clubs, and cafés. Further research is now being conducted.
